Juan Jose Ibarretxe, president of the Basque Autonomous Community from 1998 to 2009, is director of the Agirre Lehendakaria Center for Social and Political Studies, which promotes the “sustainable human development” model that helped Basque rebound from economic crisis to achieve prosperity and social stability. Ibarretxe spoke to Al Roberts, director of the UMass School of Public Policy, during a visit organized by the Department of Anthropology.
